For the U.S. and Canadian markets, NM-B wire (Non-Metallic Sheathed Cable, Type B) is one of the most widely used electrical cables for outlets, switches, and especially lighting circuits.
NM-B Copper - 600V
Alan Wire type NM-B are primarily used in residential building applications as specified by the National Electrical Code. Type NM-B is available in sizes ranging from #14 - #6 and constructions of 2 conductors with a ground and 3 conductors with a ground. The individual conductors are solid soft annealed copper with a PVC insulation and nylon jacket. The ground wire is a bare ground. The entire assembly is wrapped with a paper layer and PVC is applied to the outer jacket. Alan Wire’s NM-B is manufactured to the recognized industry standard with a friction-reducing additive to aid in the installation process.

In modern residential and light commercial construction, lighting circuits are among the most common and essential electrical systems. Choosing the right type of wire is critical for ensuring safety, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
For the U.S. and Canadian markets, NM-B wire (Non-Metallic Sheathed Cable, Type B) is one of the most widely used electrical cables for outlets, switches, and especially lighting circuits. But many customers still ask:
'Can NM-B wire be used for lighting circuits?'
This article provides a comprehensive answer from multiple perspectives - including technical standards, practical applications, model selection, and product comparisons.
Basic Information About NM-B Wire
Before analyzing its use in lighting, let's review the key features of NM-B wire:
Definition: NM-B is a non-metallic sheathed cable widely used for indoor wiring. It has a PVC jacket, multiple insulated copper conductors, and a bare copper ground wire.
Common Sizes: Available in 14 AWG – 6 AWG, covering a wide range of household and light commercial electrical needs.
Voltage Rating: 600V, suitable for most residential and light commercial systems.
Installation Environment: Designed for dry indoor applications; not suitable for damp, outdoor, or direct-burial installations.
Typical Applications:
Residential Lighting: Ceiling lights, chandeliers, and wall-mounted fixtures in bedrooms, living rooms, and dining areas.
Commercial Lighting: Suspended lighting, office ceiling fixtures, and corridor lights.
Auxiliary Lighting: Basement, attic, or storage room fixtures.
Technical Reasons:
Current Rating Compatibility:
14 AWG NM-B is rated for 15A circuits, commonly used in standard lighting applications.
12 AWG NM-B supports 20A circuits, suitable for higher-demand lighting circuits.
Insulation & Heat Resistance: PVC insulation rated up to 90°C, adequate for lighting circuit operating temperatures.
Ease of Installation: NM-B offers flexibility and is easy to run through walls, ceilings, and floor cavities.
To better understand NM-B, here's a comparison with other UL-approved cables:
| Wire Type | Application | Environment | Features & Advantages |
|---|---|---|---|
| NM-B | Indoor lighting, receptacles | Dry indoor | Low cost, easy to install, residential standard. |
| THHN | Commercial/industrial lighting in conduit | Dry or damp | High flexibility, heat resistant, ideal for conduit. |
| UF-B | Outdoor/garden lighting, direct burial | Wet or underground | Thick jacket, moisture resistant, suitable for outdoor use. |
| XHHW | High-temperature or industrial lighting | Indoor/outdoor | XLPE insulation, excellent electrical properties, long lifespan. |
